What the SAT tests

The SAT is a timed, computer-based admissions exam with two main sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Both sections include multiple-choice questions and student-produced response questions.

Your preparation therefore needs to cover two things at once:

  • Knowledge: evidence-based reading, grammar and rhetorical skills, algebra and advanced maths problem-solving.
  • Execution: identifying the task, working accurately, eliminating wrong choices and managing time without rushing into avoidable errors.

The exact registration process, available test dates, scoring arrangements, calculator rules and other current administrative details can change. Check the official College Board website for those facts rather than relying on an old study guide.

A good SAT method is not simply “do more questions”. Each practice question should tell you something specific: a content gap, a misread stem, an inefficient method or a calculation error. Your revision system should then return that point to you until you can apply it reliably.

Set up your SAT preparation system

Start by dividing your material into boards or sections that match the work you actually need to do. One board can cover Reading and Writing; another can cover Math. Within those boards, separate question types rather than keeping one long list of topics.

For Reading and Writing, useful sections include:

  • Central ideas and details
  • Inferences and evidence
  • Words in context
  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Rhetorical synthesis and transitions

For Math, use sections such as:

  • Linear equations and inequalities
  • Systems and functions
  • Ratios, percentages and proportional relationships
  • Quadratics and exponentials
  • Data, geometry and problem translation

Do not treat these labels as a prediction of the next exam. They are a practical way to sort your own mistakes. If your notes or practice results show that you repeatedly lose marks on a particular skill, give that skill its own section.

Next, put your own rules, worked examples and corrected questions into the board. A board should not be a dump of every page you have read. It should contain the information you need to answer a question, check an answer and correct a recurring mistake.

  • Choose the answer directly supported by the provided text, not one that is merely plausible.
  • For an inference, identify the sentence or detail that makes the choice necessary.

For a quadratic in factored form, the x-intercepts are the values that make either factor zero. Check the question asks for an intercept, a value, or a point.

Build a must-not-miss core

Before doing a large question set, reduce your notes to a short core checklist. The purpose is not to memorise every possible question. It is to make the first decision in a question automatic: what is being tested, what rule applies and what must be verified?

For Reading and Writing, your core should include a process for identifying the task and locating evidence. For Math, it should include equations, constraints, units and a final check. Keep the wording operational. “Know punctuation” is weak. “Check whether both sides of the punctuation are independent clauses” tells you what to do.

Review the core briefly, then work questions. If you spend most of your time rereading notes, you will not practise the decisions the SAT requires under time pressure.

A repeatable method for Reading and Writing

Use the same sequence for each question, adapting it to the stem.

1. Identify the task

Ask what the question actually wants. Is it asking for a conclusion supported by the text, the meaning of a word in context, the best transition, the most precise revision or the grammatically correct choice? Do not begin by trying to make every sentence in the passage memorable.

2. Find the controlling evidence or rule

For evidence and inference questions, point to the relevant phrase or relationship in the provided text. For grammar, inspect the sentence structure around the blank. Determine whether the issue is punctuation, agreement, verb tense, pronoun reference, modifier placement or concision.

3. Eliminate with a reason

Do not reject an option because it “sounds odd”. State why it fails: it contradicts the text, answers a different question, is too broad, changes the intended meaning or creates a grammatical error. This makes guessing less random and exposes patterns in your mistakes.

4. Choose and justify

Your final reason should be short: “Choice B is supported by the sentence stating that…” or “Choice C correctly joins two independent clauses with a semicolon.” If you cannot give a reason, mark the question for later review rather than treating recognition as certainty.

A repeatable method for Math

Start every word problem with Given and Find. Translate relationships before calculating. For example, if a problem describes a fixed rate, write the rate relationship first; do not substitute numbers into a formula you have not identified.

Then check four points:

  • Are the units consistent?
  • Did you use the quantity the question asks for rather than an intermediate value?
  • Is there a restriction, such as a positive length or a stated range?
  • Does the answer satisfy the original equation?

Use the answer choices intelligently when they can expose an arithmetic error, but do not substitute every choice if an equation solves the problem more cleanly. Student-produced responses deserve the same final check: sign, scale, units and the required form of the answer.

Practise with marked papers, not only scores

A percentage tells you how the session went. It does not tell you what to change. After a timed paper, label every missed or guessed question with one main cause:

  • content or rule not known;
  • question intent misidentified;
  • evidence or constraint overlooked;
  • inefficient method;
  • arithmetic or grammatical error;
  • time pressure.

Then rewrite the correction as a card or short rule. A useful correction explains the decision, not only the answer. “The answer is 12” is not enough. “Subtract 7 from both sides, divide by 3, then substitute 12 into the original equation” can be reused.

I added 7 to get 3x = 18, then divided by 3, so x = 6. I checked that 3(6) − 7 = 11.

The equation and verification are correct. The response would be stronger if it stated that the question asks for x and showed the inverse operations in order; the method is still valid.

Missed

Did not label the requested quantity before solving.

Model answerGiven 3x − 7 = 11 and asked to find x, add 7 to both sides to obtain 3x = 18. Divide both sides by 3, giving x = 6. Verify: 3(6) − 7 = 11, so the value is consistent with the original equation.

Do not overcorrect one isolated slip. Look for repeated causes. If you miss different-looking questions for the same underlying reason, make that reason a priority in your next session.

Add audio review after active practice

Audio is useful for short reviews while walking or travelling, but it should not replace solving. Use it to rehearse the language of a method: “identify the task, locate evidence, eliminate unsupported choices” or “write Given and Find, set up, solve, verify”. Pause the recording and explain the next step before continuing.

First, name the task before touching the answer choices. In Reading and Writing, the stem may ask for evidence, meaning, grammar or rhetorical purpose, and each task requires a different check.

For a text-based answer, return to the provided wording. A choice that is reasonable in the real world is not enough if the passage does not support it. Eliminate options that are too broad, contradict a detail or answer a different question.

In Math, write what is given and what must be found. Translate the relationship into an equation, solve with the shortest reliable method, and substitute the result back into the original statement. Verification is part of the method, not an optional final flourish.

How to use timed practice

Begin with untimed sets while learning a method. The aim is to make the reasoning correct and observable. Once you can explain your choices, add time pressure in stages: first a moderate limit, then the conditions you expect to face in the actual exam. Use the official College Board guidance for current test-day rules and timing details.

During a timed set, move on when a question is consuming time without producing progress. Record the question and return if the interface permits. A difficult question is not automatically worth more than an easy one, so protect questions you can answer accurately.

Afterwards, separate three results:

  1. Secure: answered correctly with a clear method.
  2. Uncertain: correct but guessed or unable to explain.
  3. Lost: incorrect, incomplete or left unanswered.

The uncertain group matters. It often becomes the next set of errors even though it does not yet lower the score.

A practical weekly cycle

A simple cycle can be repeated each week:

  • Session 1 — Reading and Writing rules: review one grammar or rhetorical skill, then complete a focused set and classify each error.
  • Session 2 — Math setup: practise translating word problems into equations, including a verification step for every answer.
  • Session 3 — Mixed timed work: combine sections or question types so that you must identify the task before applying a method.
  • Session 4 — Correction: turn repeated errors into flashcards and update the core checklist.
  • Session 5 — Full timed practice: follow current official guidance for the format and conditions, then mark the paper carefully.

Adjust the number and length of sessions to your school workload. Consistency matters less than having a defined job for each session. A session called “study SAT” is vague; “complete 15 grammar questions, classify errors and make three correction cards” is actionable.
