GAMSAT practice questions are most useful when they make you interpret unfamiliar material, choose a defensible answer and check your reasoning under time pressure. Memorising isolated facts is not enough: the exam tests reasoning in humanities and social sciences, written communication, and reasoning in biological and physical sciences.

The ten questions below are original practice items, not official GAMSAT questions. Answer each one from the information provided, then read the explanation immediately afterwards. Several questions include a tempting distractor that is plausible but fails because it misreads the stimulus, ignores a constraint or uses the wrong scientific relationship.

Question 11 mark

In a cell culture experiment, compound X reduces oxygen consumption from 12.0 to 9.0 micromoles per minute. Compound Y reduces it from 12.0 to 10.0 micromoles per minute. Equal amounts of each compound are added to separate cultures. Which conclusion is best supported?

The correct answer is 0. X produces a reduction of 3/12, or 25%; Y produces 2/12, or 16.7%, not 20%. The strongest distractor is option 1: the experiment supports a larger reduction under these conditions, but not greater potency in every cell type.

The calculation is simple, but the wording matters. A percentage reduction must be calculated from the untreated value, and the experiment cannot justify claims about all cell types or toxicity.

Question 2: interpreting a humanities stimulus

This item tests whether you identify the author’s argument rather than selecting a statement that merely repeats a detail.

A writer argues that public libraries should lend tools as well as books. The writer notes that many households need a drill only once or twice a year, that tool libraries already operate successfully in several councils, and that lending requires maintenance and safety checks. The tone is practical but cautiously supportive. Which claim best captures the passage?

The correct answer is 1. It includes both the proposal and the qualification about maintenance and safety. The strongest distractor is option 0 because it exaggerates the proposal: the passage supports an additional service, not the replacement of shops.

Notice the difference between the author’s position and an extreme version of it. In Section I, track tone, qualification and the scope of each claim before choosing.

Question 3: scientific proportionality

This question asks you to use a relationship supplied by the stimulus instead of relying on a memorised formula.

For a particular sensor, output voltage V is inversely proportional to resistance R. When R is 4 ohms, V is 12 volts. What is V when R is 6 ohms, assuming all other conditions remain constant?

The correct answer is 2. Since V is inversely proportional to R, VR is constant: 12 × 4 = 48. At 6 ohms, V = 48/6 = 8 V. The strongest distractor is option 3, which comes from multiplying 12 by 6/4 and therefore treats the relationship as direct rather than inverse.

Write down the direction of the relationship before calculating. A quick sense-check also helps: increasing resistance should reduce, not increase, the voltage in this stated relationship.

Question 4: reading data carefully

This item tests whether you distinguish absolute change from percentage change.

A community records 40 asthma-related emergency presentations in January and 30 in February. A neighbouring community records 100 in January and 80 in February. Which statement is correct?

The correct answer is 1. The reductions are 10 and 20 presentations. The percentage reductions are 10/40 = 25% and 20/100 = 20%. The strongest distractor is option 0 because the second community has the larger absolute reduction, but not the larger percentage reduction.

GAMSAT data questions often reward separating what changed in raw numbers from what changed relative to the baseline. State the denominator explicitly when checking a percentage.

Question 5: applying a biological principle

This question tests whether you apply the stated mechanism to a new situation.

Two spherical cells have the same membrane composition. Cell A has a radius of 1 micrometre and cell B has a radius of 2 micrometres. Diffusion across the membrane is the only route for oxygen entry. Which statement is best supported?

The correct answer is 0. Surface area is proportional to r², so it increases fourfold; volume is proportional to r³, so it increases eightfold. The strongest distractor is option 1: the larger cell has half, not twice, the surface-area-to-volume ratio.

Do not add biological conclusions that the stimulus does not support. The geometry gives relative area and volume; it does not establish an internal oxygen concentration without further information.

Question 6: identifying an assumption

The next item tests argument quality. Ask what must be true for the conclusion to follow.

A city proposes planting trees along major roads. Its report states that shaded roads are cooler and concludes that tree planting will reduce heat-related illness across the city. Which assumption is most necessary?

The correct answer is 1. The conclusion depends on trees surviving and reducing actual exposure in relevant locations. The strongest distractor is option 3 because it is far too strong: the argument does not need heat to be the only cause of illness, only that reducing exposure may reduce risk.

For Section I, separate evidence, conclusion and assumption. A statement can sound relevant while being unnecessary to the argument.

Question 7: interpreting an experiment

This question tests control of variables and the limits of a conclusion.

Seedlings are divided randomly into two groups. Group A receives fertiliser F and Group B receives no fertiliser. Both groups receive the same water, light and soil. After four weeks, the mean height is greater in Group A. Which conclusion is most justified?

The correct answer is 0. Random allocation and controlled conditions support a causal conclusion for these seedlings and conditions. The strongest distractor is option 1 because the experiment does not establish that the effect applies to every plant species.

The best answer usually matches the experiment’s scale: the tested organism, treatment and conditions. Avoid universal language such as ‘every’, ‘always’ and ‘essential’ unless the evidence warrants it.

Question 8: quantitative sense-checking

This item tests estimation and whether an answer is physically plausible.

A 60-watt lamp operates for 5 minutes. Ignoring losses, how much electrical energy does it use?

The correct answer is 2. Energy equals power multiplied by time: 60 W × 300 s = 18,000 J, so option 3 is actually the correct result. Therefore the marked answer should be 3, not 2. The strongest distractor is option 2, which results from using 60 seconds rather than 300 seconds.

This is a useful error to catch: the explanation exposes a mismatch between the selected index and the calculation. A reliable practice system should flag that inconsistency rather than teaching the wrong answer. The correct option is 18,000 J, option 3.

Question 9: tone and inference

This question tests whether you can infer the writer’s attitude without overstating it.

A review of a new transport scheme describes its first month as ‘promising but incomplete’. It praises reduced travel times on two routes, notes that three other routes remain unreliable, and says that longer-term effects are ‘not yet measurable’. What is the reviewer’s position?

The correct answer is 2. ‘Promising but incomplete’ combines positive evidence with explicit limits. The strongest distractor is option 1 because it removes the reviewer’s caution about unreliable routes and insufficient long-term evidence.

Words such as ‘some’, ‘all’, ‘not yet’ and ‘final’ often control the answer. Read them as constraints, not decoration.

Question 10: integrating scientific information

The final item combines a table with a conclusion. Check both the trend and the exception.

A treatment is tested at three doses. The mean symptom score falls from 10 before treatment to 8 at 5 mg, 6 at 10 mg and 5.5 at 20 mg. The study reports that the 10 mg and 20 mg results are not meaningfully different. Which conclusion is best supported?

The correct answer is 2. The score improves substantially by 10 mg, while the reported comparison says 20 mg adds no meaningful benefit. The strongest distractor is option 0 because the numerical decrease does not prove that every dose increase produces a clinically important improvement.

The strongest answer respects the study’s reported interpretation. Do not turn a small numerical difference into a clinical recommendation unless the evidence supports that step.

A written communication check

GAMSAT also tests written communication through two essays. For practice, mark an essay against the task: does it address the prompt and constraints, develop a logical position, use relevant examples, and maintain clear paragraph progression? Do not reward length by itself.

‘A society is judged by how it treats those who cannot benefit it.’ Discuss.

A society should be judged partly by its treatment of people who cannot repay it, because this reveals whether dignity is treated as conditional. Public hospitals and disability support show that collective resources can protect people during dependence. However, support must be designed with accountability, because poorly designed systems can preserve exclusion rather than remove it. The strongest test is therefore not generosity alone but whether institutions give people safety, voice and a path to participation.

The position is clear and the paragraphs progress logically. The essay uses relevant examples but remains general in places.

Define what ‘benefit’ could mean beyond income or productivity.

Develop one counterargument with a specific example and rebuttal.

Make the final implication more concrete.

Model answerThesis: dignity should not depend on immediate economic usefulness. Define benefit as financial, social or civic contribution, while recognising that human worth is not measured by output. Argue that hospitals, disability services and emergency relief test whether rights are conditional. Address the concern that support can become paternalistic or financially unsustainable, then distinguish accountable support from abandonment. Conclude that a fair society creates routes to participation while protecting people during periods when participation is limited.

This type of review turns a broad essay weakness into a precise next action. Revise the missed point by writing one paragraph, not by rereading the whole essay without a target.

Review the pattern, not just the score

After these questions, record whether each error came from comprehension, calculation, scientific knowledge, overreach or timing. A score alone does not tell you what to practise next.

Use the lowest section to choose the next practice set. If quantitative sense-checks are weak, practise units, proportions and order-of-magnitude estimates. If scope and assumptions are weak, underline the conclusion and ask what must be true for it to follow.
