What this GMAT study plan is designed to do

A useful GMAT study plan is not a list of topics to memorise. The exam is a computer-based, adaptive assessment of quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and data interpretation or analysis through time-limited multiple-choice sections. In some versions, an analytical writing task may also be included, so confirm the exact structure of the version you will sit on the official GMAT website.

Your preparation therefore needs to improve four behaviours at the same time:

  • setting up the question correctly before calculating or reading too deeply;
  • choosing an efficient route rather than the first possible route;
  • eliminating tempting wrong answers systematically;
  • maintaining accuracy and pace throughout a section, especially near the end.

The plan below assumes 10 hours a week for six weeks. If you have less time, keep the same order and reduce the number of practice questions, rather than removing error review. If you have more time, add questions to the review sessions rather than turning every session into an untimed topic lesson.

Use a diagnostic before Week 1. Take an official practice test under realistic conditions, record your timing by section, and save every question you guessed on. Do not use the result only as a score. Create three lists: questions answered incorrectly, questions answered correctly but slowly, and questions answered confidently. The first two lists determine the plan.

Set up your study board

Start with one board divided by skill and by failure type. Store the original question or a faithful summary, your working, the reason your first approach failed, and the method you want to repeat. This makes revision about decisions rather than vague confidence.

When you add material, label it with one primary reason for review: setup, calculation, reading, elimination, or pacing. A question can contain several errors, but one primary label makes the weekly review measurable.

The board should stay small enough to review. Do not copy an entire textbook into it. Add a principle only when a question has shown that you need it, or when it explains several questions you are getting wrong.

The six-week plan

Week 1: Diagnose and classify — 10 hours

Session 1: 2 hours — diagnostic review. Revisit the diagnostic without a timer. For each missed or guessed question, write the question type, the information given, what had to be found, and the first step you should have taken. Separate knowledge gaps from process errors.

Session 2: 2 hours — Quant foundations. Practise translating percentages, ratios, averages, rates, equations and inequalities into a short setup. Complete a small set untimed, then redo the same questions with a time limit. The purpose is not speed yet; it is seeing whether the setup survives pressure.

Session 3: 2 hours — Verbal foundations. For reading-based questions, summarise the role of each paragraph in a few words. For arguments, identify evidence, conclusion and assumption. Record why each wrong option fails instead of recording only the correct option.

Session 4: 2 hours — Data interpretation. Work from tables, charts and multi-source information. Before calculating, write down the requested comparison and the relevant units. Practise estimating when exact arithmetic cannot change the answer.

Session 5: 2 hours — review and plan. Count errors by category. Choose two high-frequency weaknesses for Week 2. Leave lower-frequency issues in the board, but do not let them displace the main weaknesses.

At the end of Week 1, you should know whether your main problem is understanding, setup, careless execution, elimination or time. If you cannot name the problem, your error log is too vague.

Week 2: Build reliable methods — 10 hours

Session 1: 2 hours — Quant method practice. Choose two weak areas from the diagnostic. For each question, spend a few seconds identifying the structure before doing arithmetic. Practise substituting simple values where that is valid, testing answer choices, and using bounds to reject impossible results.

Session 2: 2 hours — Verbal method practice. Complete argument and reading questions in separate groups. For each one, state what the stem demands: strengthen, weaken, inference, purpose, assumption or another task. Then eliminate answers that reverse the logic, go beyond the evidence, answer a different question or use an extreme claim not supported by the passage.

Session 3: 2 hours — Data method practice. Build a repeatable sequence: identify the requested quantity, locate the relevant values, check units, estimate the result, then calculate only as far as needed. Include questions where the visual contains information that is irrelevant to the stem.

Session 4: 2 hours — mixed timed set. Use a short, timed set containing all three reasoning areas. Do not chase a perfect result. Record where you spent time and whether the eventual error came from rushing, overworking or selecting a distractor.

Session 5: 2 hours — correction session. Redo every wrong question from the mixed set without looking at the explanation. Then write one sentence beginning, “Next time I will…” A useful sentence describes an action, such as “write the denominator before comparing percentages”, not a feeling such as “be more careful”.

Week 3: Make pacing deliberate — 10 hours

Session 1: 2 hours — Quant under time. Use short timed blocks. At the end of each block, label every question as correct and efficient, correct but slow, wrong from process, or wrong from knowledge. Spend most of the review on the middle two categories.

Session 2: 2 hours — Verbal under time. Practise reading for structure rather than rereading every sentence. After each passage or argument, state the conclusion or purpose before looking at the options. Review any answer chosen because it “sounded right”.

Session 3: 2 hours — Data under time. Practise switching between reading, table interpretation and calculation. Use an explicit decision rule: if the method is not clear after a short initial read, mark the issue in your log and move on according to the rules of your registered exam version. Do not invent a complicated method simply because you have already spent time on the question.

Session 4: 2 hours — section simulation. Complete one full timed section using the official timing and interface for your version. Avoid interruptions. Review the last third separately: late-section errors often show whether your pace is sustainable.

Session 5: 2 hours — fatigue review. Compare early and late accuracy. If accuracy falls late, practise shorter blocks with a planned pacing check. If accuracy is stable but time is poor, target setup and elimination rather than adding more content.

Week 4: Mixed reasoning and adaptive pressure — 10 hours

Session 1: 2 hours — mixed Quant and Data. Alternate question types so that you must identify the method before solving. Include estimation, bounds, ratios, rates and table interpretation.

Session 2: 2 hours — mixed Verbal. Alternate passage and argument tasks. Give yourself a brief justification for every answer: the evidence used, the logical relationship, or the reason the other options fail.

Session 3: 2 hours — error-pattern drills. Take your ten most common errors and create one short drill for each recurring pattern. Examples include confusing percentage points with percentage change, averaging subgroup averages, treating a sufficient condition as necessary, or accepting an answer that does not address the stem.

Session 4: 2 hours — full practice test. Use an official or otherwise reliable test that matches your registered version. Follow its instructions and timing. Record both score and process data: unanswered items if applicable, time spent, guesses, and late-section performance.

Session 5: 2 hours — detailed review. Spend at least as much time reviewing as testing. Classify each miss, then select the three issues with the greatest effect on accuracy or time. Do not respond to one unusual question by rebuilding your entire plan.

Week 5: Target the weakest returns — 10 hours

This week is deliberately less broad. Use your test data to choose the two sections or error types that cost the most marks or time.

  • 2 hours: revise the underlying rule or reasoning pattern, then complete a small untimed set;
  • 2 hours: repeat the set under time and compare the method, not just the score;
  • 2 hours: complete a second weak-area set with mixed question types;
  • 2 hours: complete one timed section or a selected group of sections;
  • 2 hours: review, update the board and revisit all cards due from repeated errors.

If the official information for your version includes an analytical writing task, use one of these sessions for the required task and check the current instructions on the official website. Do not assume that preparation advice for an older version applies unchanged.

Your weak-area report should rank problems by evidence. A low percentage on three questions is less informative than a repeated setup error across fifteen questions, so include both accuracy and frequency.

Week 6: Stabilise performance — 10 hours

Session 1: 2 hours — targeted correction. Review the weakest report and complete only the questions that test those patterns. Explain the first step aloud or in writing before calculating.

Session 2: 2 hours — timed mixed practice. Work in the same order and with the same breaks you expect to use. Check whether your pacing plan leaves enough time for the final questions.

Session 3: 2 hours — full practice test. Treat this as a rehearsal, not as a final verdict. Use the current official interface and instructions where available.

Session 4: 2 hours — review and light consolidation. Rework misses, study the core board, and remove rules you have repeatedly applied correctly. A smaller board is easier to use in the final days.

Session 5: 2 hours — final method rehearsal. Do a short, mixed set. Practise reading the stem, naming the goal, selecting a route, eliminating options, and checking units or bounds. Stop before fatigue turns practice into careless guessing.

On the final day, use only light review. Check the official body's current instructions for identification, timing, permitted items and any version-specific requirements. Do not introduce a new topic because it appears once in a practice set.

How to measure whether the plan is working

Each week, track four figures:

  1. accuracy on questions attempted;
  2. accuracy on questions that were initially guessed;
  3. median time on correct questions;
  4. errors in the final part of a timed section.

An improving plan may first show better setup and fewer careless errors before the score changes. That is useful evidence. If accuracy rises but timing does not, increase timed mixed practice. If timing improves but accuracy falls, slow the first read and make the question demand explicit before solving.

Do not use one practice score to decide that a whole section is weak. Look for a repeated pattern across question types and sessions. Your next week's work should follow the pattern that loses the most reliable marks, not the topic you most enjoy studying.
