Start with the test you are taking
The GRE General Test is a computer-based admissions exam covering Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Verbal questions include reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence. Quantitative Reasoning covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. Analytical Writing currently contains one timed essay task.
The test uses an adaptive design by section, so your plan needs to develop two skills at the same time: accuracy and controlled pacing. It is not enough to memorise vocabulary or collect mathematical shortcuts. You need to translate wording accurately, eliminate options with evidence, work efficiently and check for traps.
Before starting, confirm the current registration information, available test dates, identification requirements and official test arrangements on the official GRE website. Those details can change and are not part of this study plan.
This six-week plan assumes approximately 8–10 hours per week. If you have less time, keep the order of the work but shorten each session. If you have more time, add review rather than simply doing more new questions.
Set up your baseline in week one
The first week is for diagnosis, not for proving that you are ready. Use one representative practice set for each area and complete at least one timed Analytical Writing task. Follow the instructions and timing used by the current official practice materials.
Do not judge the result only by the percentage correct. Record:
- whether the error came from knowledge, interpretation, method or carelessness;
- how long you spent on questions you eventually missed;
- which wrong options attracted you and why;
- whether your essay made a clear claim and supported it with relevant examples;
- which questions you left unfinished or rushed.
Create one revision board with a section for each recurring skill. Keep the source material you use for revision on the board, including worked examples and your own error notes. The board should be a decision-making tool, not a storage folder.

Use a short plan before difficult questions, eliminate explicitly, and reserve time to check signs, units, selected answers and whether the essay addresses the exact prompt.
- Text completion — predict the sentence direction before inspecting the options
- Sentence equivalence — find two answers that create closely matching meanings, not merely synonyms
- Reading comprehension — distinguish a passage claim from an inference that is only plausible
The useful feature of this board is the connection between a rule and a behaviour. “Inequalities reverse direction” is a fact; “test a negative value before committing” is how that fact prevents an error.
A six-week GRE study plan
Use five study sessions per week. Each session below includes a suggested duration. A sixth, optional session can be used for a full mixed practice set or rest, depending on your workload.
Week 1: Diagnose and organise
Session 1 — 90 minutes: baseline Quantitative Reasoning. Complete a mixed set using current official-style timing. Mark every question as correct, incorrect or guessed. For each error, write the first step you should have taken.
Session 2 — 90 minutes: baseline Verbal Reasoning. Include reading comprehension, text completion and sentence equivalence. Record the precise word or sentence relationship that controlled each answer.
Session 3 — 75 minutes: Analytical Writing baseline. Write one timed essay task. Afterwards, label the thesis, reasons, examples, qualification or counterpoint and conclusion. If one element is absent, add it to your board.
Session 4 — 60 minutes: error classification. Sort errors into four groups: missing knowledge, misread wording, inefficient method and careless execution. The group with the most repeat errors becomes your first priority.
Session 5 — 90 minutes: targeted repair. Rework six to ten missed questions without looking at the answer. Then compare your method with the explanation and write one reusable rule.
Week 2: Build the quantitative base
Session 1 — 90 minutes: arithmetic and algebra. Practise percentages, ratios, averages, exponents, linear equations and inequalities. For each question, state what the variables represent before calculating.
Session 2 — 75 minutes: quantitative comparison. Focus on constraints and counterexamples. Test zero, one, negative values, equal values and boundary values where they are permitted. Do not rely on a diagram or on a pattern from a single example.
Session 3 — 90 minutes: geometry and data analysis. Review angle relationships, triangles, circles, area, volume, tables, graphs and averages. Write units beside intermediate values when the question uses them.
Session 4 — 60 minutes: verbal maintenance. Complete a short set of sentence equivalence and text completion questions. For every answer, explain the sentence’s logical direction in plain language.
Session 5 — 90 minutes: mixed timed set and review. Use timing, but spend at least as long reviewing as answering. A correct answer reached through an unreliable guess is still a review item.
Week 3: Make verbal reasoning evidence-based
Session 1 — 90 minutes: reading comprehension. For each passage, identify its main purpose, the role of each paragraph and the evidence supporting the answer. Reject options that are true but do not answer the question asked.
Session 2 — 75 minutes: text completion. Cover the options mentally and predict the sentence direction. Look for contrast, cause, continuation and qualification signals before choosing vocabulary.
Session 3 — 75 minutes: sentence equivalence. Treat the task as meaning construction. Choose a pair only when both answers produce substantially the same completed sentence.
Session 4 — 60 minutes: quantitative maintenance. Revisit your two weakest quantitative rules using new questions, not the examples you already memorised.
Session 5 — 90 minutes: mixed Verbal set. Work under controlled timing. After marking, classify each missed answer as a vocabulary gap, logic error, unsupported inference or pacing error.
At this stage, generate a short checklist from your own mistakes rather than copying a general list. A useful checklist might say: “Find the contrast word”, “Check whether the question asks for an inference” and “Pair sentence-equivalence answers by completed meaning”.
Week 4: Develop the essay method and integrate skills
Session 1 — 75 minutes: essay planning. For several prompts, spend only a few minutes outlining a thesis, two reasons, examples and a qualification. Do not write every essay in full.
Session 2 — 75 minutes: one complete timed essay. Prioritise a direct thesis, developed examples and a clear relationship between each example and the claim. Avoid examples that are merely named but not explained.
Session 3 — 90 minutes: quantitative mixed practice. Mix algebra, geometry and data analysis so that you must choose the method rather than follow a topic label.
Session 4 — 75 minutes: verbal mixed practice. Include all three Verbal question types. Practise eliminating options by citing a phrase, relationship or constraint.
Session 5 — 90 minutes: partial simulation. Complete a sustained mixed session using the current practice format. Note when concentration drops and which question types consume disproportionate time.
Your essay review should ask practical questions: Does the thesis answer the exact prompt? Does each reason have a specific example? Is the qualification meaningful? Does the conclusion follow from the argument rather than repeat it?
Week 5: Work on weaknesses under time pressure
By now, your study time should be weighted towards repeated weaknesses. Do not divide time equally between subjects if your records show a clear gap.
The picker below represents a sensible way to choose the next 10-minute explanation: it uses recent errors, not personal preference. For example, if you repeatedly miss quantitative comparison questions, a short lesson on testing constraints is more useful than another general vocabulary review.

Use the week as four cycles: attempt a small set, inspect the exact error, revise the rule, then attempt a similar set later. The aim is not to make a weakness look better once; it is to stop the same reasoning failure recurring.
Session 1 — 90 minutes: weakest Quantitative skill, followed by error review.
Session 2 — 90 minutes: weakest Verbal skill, followed by explanation of every elimination.
Session 3 — 75 minutes: one essay and a structured self-review.
Session 4 — 90 minutes: mixed timed practice, with deliberate checking of signs, units and question wording.
Session 5 — 60 minutes: flashcard review and reattempts of previously missed questions.
Week 6: Consolidate and reduce avoidable errors
Session 1 — 90 minutes: complete a full practice session using official current materials and conditions as closely as practical. Record fatigue and pacing, not just the result.
Session 2 — 90 minutes: review every uncertain or incorrect response. Build a final list of rules, traps and pacing decisions.
Session 3 — 75 minutes: write one final timed essay and compare it with your previous essay. Look for better reasoning and support, not just more polished sentences.
Session 4 — 60 minutes: revise the final list. Practise explaining your approach aloud using five headings: Understand, Plan, Work or Eliminate, Check and Time.
Session 5 — 45–60 minutes: light retrieval only. Review formulas, recurring verbal signals, essay structure and your personal error cards. Stop adding large new topics unless your records show a serious gap.
The day before the test, follow the official instructions for your appointment and prepare the required materials. Do not try to compensate for an incomplete topic list with an exhausting late session.
Track progress by section, not by mood
Every week, record three measures for Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning: accuracy, questions abandoned or rushed, and repeated error type. For Analytical Writing, record whether the response contained a direct thesis, developed evidence, a qualification and a conclusion that followed logically.
A useful weakness log ranks sections by marks earned and recurrence. It should show whether a section is genuinely improving or merely receiving more practice. This example uses platform review data, not an official GRE marking scheme.
The first row deserves attention because it combines a low success rate with repeated exposure. The right response is not necessarily more questions. Review the constraint-testing method, then use a small number of new questions to see whether the method transfers.
A practical session template
For most sessions, use this sequence:
- Retrieve — 10 minutes: recall rules or structures without notes.
- Attempt — 30–45 minutes: complete a focused set with controlled timing.
- Explain — 15 minutes: justify each answer or elimination in writing.
- Repair — 15 minutes: rework missed questions and create one error card.
- Schedule — 5 minutes: decide when the card or skill will return.
Keep a question only when it teaches a decision. A card saying “What is the area of a circle?” is less useful than one saying “When a geometry diagram is not to scale, which stated relationship must be used before calculating?” Your cards should reflect the errors you actually make.
Also practise stopping. If a question is absorbing too much time, mark your best-supported option if appropriate, move on according to the test interface and return only if your pacing plan allows it. Efficient pacing means controlling the whole section, not winning every individual question.
