What this MCAT study plan is built around
The MCAT is a computer-based exam with four multiple-choice sections:
- Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems (Chem/Phys)
- Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (CARS)
- Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems (Bio/Biochem)
- Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behaviour (Psych/Soc)
All four sections primarily test passage-based reasoning under time pressure. You need content knowledge, but you also need to interpret data, identify variables and controls, follow causal direction, and choose an answer using evidence from the passage.
This plan uses eight weeks and about 15–18 hours per week. It assumes you have some basic science knowledge. If you are starting with major gaps in chemistry, biology or psychology, extend the content-review phase rather than trying to compensate with longer practice sessions.
The plan has five repeating activities:
- Learn or repair one defined content area.
- Work through passages under realistic time pressure.
- Review every question, including correct guesses.
- Convert repeat errors into small flashcards or checklists.
- Revisit weak areas after a delay.
Do not measure progress only by the number of questions completed. The useful measure is whether you can explain why the correct answer follows from the passage and why the strongest distractor fails.
Set up your study week
Use six study days and one lighter day or rest day. A workable weekly structure is:
- Monday, 2 hours: Chem/Phys content and one passage set
- Tuesday, 2 hours: CARS passages and review
- Wednesday, 2 hours: Bio/Biochem content and one passage set
- Thursday, 2 hours: Psych/Soc content and one passage set
- Friday, 2 hours: mixed passage practice and error review
- Saturday, 4–6 hours: timed practice, detailed review and revision
- Sunday, 1–2 hours: spaced repetition and planning, or rest if fatigue is affecting accuracy
The exact timing and current administration rules can change. Check the official MCAT and AAMC websites for the current exam-day structure, registration information, permitted items and official practice resources.
Start by taking a diagnostic using official or high-quality practice material. Do not spend the first week trying to obtain a perfect score. Your diagnostic should show whether a problem comes from missing knowledge, misreading, weak scientific reasoning, calculation, or time management.
Create an error record with five columns:

An error record is more useful than a list of topics because it tells you what to do next.

The queue should remain small enough to complete. If reviews regularly take longer than planned, reduce new cards and protect time for passage review.
Week 1: Diagnose and build the system
Target: 15 hours.
Use the first week to establish a baseline rather than attempting a complete content review.
- Take a diagnostic section or full diagnostic under the conditions you can reproduce.
- Review every question and label the error: knowledge, passage interpretation, data interpretation, mathematics, distractor selection or timing.
- Make a topic inventory for the four sections.
- Complete two CARS sessions, focusing on identifying the author’s central claim and paragraph function.
- Begin a small daily review set of formulas, definitions and recurring mistakes.
For science passages, practise writing a one-sentence summary before answering questions: “The passage tests whether X changes Y when Z is altered.” This prevents you from treating every detail as equally important.
Do not make a study plan based only on your diagnostic percentage. A high result with many guesses needs a different response from a lower result caused by genuinely missing content.
Week 2: Repair the largest science gaps
Target: 16 hours.
Allocate three sessions to Chem/Phys, two to Bio/Biochem, one to Psych/Soc and two shorter CARS sessions.
For Chem/Phys, focus on translating units and relationships before substituting numbers. Practise identifying what each variable means, whether it increases or decreases, and whether the answer should be large, small, positive or negative.
For Bio/Biochem, review the relationship between experimental design and biological conclusion. Ask:
- What was manipulated?
- What was measured?
- What was the control?
- What conclusion is directly supported?
- What conclusion would require an assumption outside the passage?
For Psych/Soc, use concise definitions with examples and contrasts. A definition that cannot distinguish two similar concepts will not help much in a passage.
The board below shows the level of detail to capture. It is not a replacement for your full notes; it is a short working surface for repeated decisions.
A board on this topic ends up looking like this:
- Independent variable — the factor deliberately changed by the investigator
- Dependent variable — the measured outcome
- Negative control — shows whether the outcome occurs without the active intervention
- Write units beside each quantity before calculating
- Estimate the order of magnitude before choosing an option
- Check axes, units, baseline and direction before comparing groups
- A relative increase is not automatically a statistically or biologically important increase
- State the author’s thesis in your own words
- Prefer an option supported by the passage over one that is merely true in general
Association alone does not establish causation; look for manipulation, control and a plausible mechanism.
Spend at least as long reviewing a passage set as answering it. For each missed question, locate the sentence, figure or principle that should have decided the answer.
Week 3: Add timed passage work
Target: 17 hours.
Keep content review to about 40 per cent of your time. Use the rest for passages and review.
Complete three Chem/Phys or Bio/Biochem passage sets, two Psych/Soc sets and three CARS sessions. For each set, record both untimed and timed accuracy where possible. If your untimed result is strong but your timed result falls sharply, your next task is not more content review. It is faster passage mapping, shorter calculations and better elimination.
Use a fixed passage routine:
- Read the opening for the research question or situation.
- Identify the main variables, groups and controls.
- Note the direction of important findings.
- Read the question stem carefully, including words such as “most directly”, “least”, “except” and “best supports”.
- Predict the type of answer before inspecting every option.
- Eliminate options that contradict the passage, use the wrong variable or require an unsupported assumption.
For CARS, do not turn the passage into a collection of isolated facts. Record the author’s stance, the purpose of each paragraph and the evidence used to support the central argument.
Week 4: Build a mixed practice habit
Target: 17–18 hours.
Begin each weekday with 20–30 minutes of spaced review. Then alternate focused and mixed work:
- Two Chem/Phys sessions with calculations and figures
- Two Bio/Biochem sessions with experiments and pathways
- Two Psych/Soc sessions with definitions in context
- Four short CARS sessions
- One mixed timed block at the weekend
At the end of each session, classify your misses. “I need to study biology” is too broad. “I confused competitive and non-competitive inhibition when interpreting the graph” gives you an action: review the relationship, make one contrast card and complete a new graph question.
Use official practice material where available, because question style and passage construction matter. Avoid treating third-party scores as directly interchangeable with official results.
Week 5: Target the weakest section and skill
Target: 16–18 hours.
By this point, your error record should identify a weakest section and a weakest process. Examples include:
- Chem/Phys: units and proportional reasoning
- Bio/Biochem: distinguishing experimental result from conclusion
- Psych/Soc: applying definitions rather than recalling them
- CARS: selecting an answer that matches the author’s argument
- All sections: missing qualifiers or reversing causal direction
Spend roughly half the week on that combination. Keep the other sections active with shorter sets so that your performance does not become too narrow.
The study interface should make this prioritisation visible. A useful picker identifies heat from both failed reviews and lost passage marks, not from your personal impression of a topic.

Do not respond to a weak area by reading an entire textbook again. Review the specific principle, then test it in a new passage. The passage is where you learn whether the knowledge is usable.
Week 6: Practise integration and endurance
Target: 18 hours.
Use this week to combine sections and processes. Complete at least two longer timed practice sessions, then review them on separate blocks of time. If you cannot review properly on the same day, schedule the review before starting new questions.
During review, ask four questions:
- What was the passage doing: describing, comparing, testing or challenging a claim?
- Which data actually mattered?
- Which scientific principle linked the data to the answer?
- Which distractor was most tempting, and what made it wrong?
Practise reading figures and tables in words. For example: “The treatment group rises while the control remains stable, so the intervention is associated with the measured increase under these conditions.” Then check whether that statement overclaims causality.
Protect sleep and normal meals during this phase. Longer sessions that produce careless reading are not useful endurance practice.
Week 7: Simulate, analyse and consolidate
Target: 16–18 hours.
Take a full practice exam or the closest complete simulation available to you. Follow the current official instructions and timing for the version you are using; confirm those details through the official source rather than relying on an old study guide.
The following day, review the simulation in three passes:
- Pass one: identify questions lost through content gaps.
- Pass two: identify questions lost through reading, units, qualifiers or causal reasoning.
- Pass three: identify correct answers that were guesses.
Turn only recurring or high-value errors into new cards. A card should test one decision, such as “What does a negative control show?” rather than asking for an entire chapter summary.
Your weak-area report should rank topics by both accuracy and recurrence. A topic that appears often and produces low accuracy deserves priority over a rare topic with one isolated miss.
A report for this point in the plan might look like this:
Week 8: Consolidate without cramming
Target: 14–16 hours, adjusted around your exam date.
Use the final week to maintain rather than expand your syllabus.
- Complete short mixed passage sets.
- Review your error record and high-value cards.
- Rework selected questions you previously missed without looking at the explanation.
- Practise formula recall and unit checks, but apply them in context.
- Complete a final timed session early enough to recover properly.
- Keep the last day light and organised.
Do not attempt to learn every remaining detail. Prioritise principles that recur across passages: variables and controls, evidence versus assumption, direction of change, units and magnitudes, and careful reading of qualifiers.

How to adjust the plan
If you have only four weeks, combine Weeks 1–2, Weeks 3–4, Weeks 5–6 and Weeks 7–8, but keep the error-review process. If you have twelve or more weeks, retain the same sequence and add time to Weeks 2–5 rather than postponing timed practice until the end.
If your score is low across every section, spend more time repairing core content while completing a small number of passages each week. If your content knowledge is sound but passage accuracy is weak, reduce rereading and increase targeted review of stems, figures, controls and distractors. If your accuracy is good but timing is poor, practise shorter decisions and calculations under controlled time limits.
