Question 11 mark

Researchers place identical red blood cells in solutions with different sodium chloride concentrations. Cells placed in 0.20% NaCl swell and some lyse, whereas cells placed in 0.90% NaCl retain their shape. Which statement best identifies the independent variable in this experiment?

The sodium chloride concentration is selected by the researchers, so it is the independent variable. Lysis, cell volume and haemoglobin release are measured responses. The strongest distractor is the proportion of cells that lyse: it changes between groups, but it is the dependent variable rather than the variable manipulated by the researchers.
