A practice question
Choose an answer and it is marked, with the explanation. From EPPP Practice Questions: 10 Vignette-Style Items.
A client tells a psychologist, "I have decided to kill my former partner tomorrow. I know where they will be, and I have access to a firearm. Do not tell anyone." The client denies suicidal thoughts and refuses to discuss a safety plan. What is the psychologist's best next step?
The best answer is to assess the threat and act to protect potential victims while following the applicable law, ethical standards and organisational procedures. The strongest distractor is maintaining confidentiality: confidentiality is important, but it is not an absolute reason to ignore a credible and imminent risk of serious harm. Immediate contact with the former partner may be necessary in some circumstances, but acting before clarifying the threat and relevant obligations is premature.
