A practice question
Choose an answer and it is marked, with the explanation. From PE Exam Practice Questions: 9 Worked Problems.
A concentric axial tensile load of 120 kN acts on a prismatic bar with a cross-sectional area of 600 mm². Assuming uniform stress, what is the average normal stress?
Use σ = P/A. Convert 120 kN to 120,000 N; 120,000 N / 600 mm² = 200 N/mm² = 200 MPa. The strongest distractor is 240 MPa, which can result from using an incorrect area or arithmetic; the given area is 600 mm², not 500 mm².
