Practice
Pick sections from across a subject's boards, choose flashcards, questions or an oral station, and start one session on all of it.
Every board has its own Cards, Exam and Oral tabs, and each of them works on that one board. The Practice tab on a subject's dashboard is the way to practise across boards: pick what you want to cover from anywhere in the subject, choose how, and start.
Open it from the tab strip under the subject's name — Index · Practice · Study. The pane remembers what you had ticked while you move between the tabs and when you come back from a session.
Picking what to practise#
The picker reads the subject's index in three columns: the index's sections, the entries in the one you have open, and the sections of the board you have open. Tick at whichever level you mean.
- A section of the index ticks every board in it that can be practised.
- A board ticks the whole board.
- A section of a board ticks that section alone. Each one shows how well you know it and how many cards it has.
A row with some of its contents ticked shows a dash rather than a tick. Everything you have picked is listed under Selected, with the number of sections, boards, cards and due cards underneath; remove a pick there, or clear the lot.
Some entries are listed but cannot be ticked, and say why: a planned entry has no board yet, a board that is too thin has too little written on it for anything to be made from it, and a board shared with you is someone else's to practise.
The search box narrows all three columns by name. On a phone the columns become one list: tap a row to go in, and the arrow at the top to come back out.
Quick picks
The chips above the picker tick a set for you. Each one replaces what is ticked, and a chip with nothing behind it is not shown.
- Due now: sections with flashcards due.
- What you got wrong: sections where a marked paper, an oral or a card you keep failing shows a gap.
- Weakest: sections you are struggling with or that need work.
- Fading: sections you knew, but have not been tested on for over three weeks.
- Not tested yet: sections with no cards or papers behind them, or cards you have never reviewed.
- Same as last time: the selection you last started a session with, on this device.
None of them makes a model call. They are read from your cards, papers and orals as they stand.
Formats#
Flashcards drills the cards on what you picked. Due only deals the ones that are due; Everything selected deals every card in the selection. A whole board brings all of its cards, including any filed against a heading. This is a session of its own: it does not continue or replace the subject's own due queue, and finishing it brings you back to the Practice tab.
Questions sets a written paper from the picked sections, the same paper the Exam tab sets: choose written, multiple choice or both, how many questions, and how hard. There is an optional box to steer it in your own words. If the subject has no examiner yet, Start asks you to choose one first, and on the free plan it is your one exam — see plans and usage. It opens on the first picked board's Exam tab, ready to sit.
Oral lists the stations already written on the picked boards, least practised first. Pick one and Start opens it. Stations are written on a board's Oral tab; if there are none yet, the pane links you there. See oral exams.
Starting#
The line at the foot of the pane says what Start will do before you press it: the format, how many sections on how many boards, the size of the session, and roughly how many minutes it takes. Start is greyed out until there is something to start: a pick with no cards due under Due only, for instance, says so and offers Everything selected instead.
